Is your productivity stuck in traffic?

At Smart Commute our goal is to ease gridlock, improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while making your commute less expensive and more enjoyable.

Smart Commute is a program of Metrolinx and the municipalities in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area.

Through a network of 11 offices across the GTHA, we work with employers to educate their workforce about the many alternatives to driving to work alone.

It’s a fact—increased growth in and around cities brings with it a corresponding increase in traffic congestion. A significant proportion of road traffic during weekdays comprises people travelling to and from their workplaces.

Depending on the distance, alternatives to driving alone could include public transit, cycling, walking or carpooling.

We’re fortunate in our region to have many public transit options are available, from TTC to Züm—Brampton Transit’s new Bus Rapid Transit service—to the extensive regional GO Transit system.  Just think for a minute about the fact that one 12-car GO train can carry the same number of people as 1,670 cars, and one GO bus can replace about 50 cars!

Or if you’re not close to a transit line, you could try setting up a carpool. The simple act of two people sharing one car trip instantly cuts in half the costs and the impact on the environment and your wallet! Once you have made the decision to share the ride, you can use Carpool Zone, our free online ride-matching service to find a buddy. And here are some tips to get you off to a good start.

The easiest way to find someone to carpool with is using an online service like People using this website have made an impressive reduction in Vehicle Kilometers Travelled (VKTs) totalling 42,135,454 km! That’s the equivalent of 3,443 round trips between Halifax and Vancouver!

All across Canada, there are similar programs matching people who have similar trips so they can share the ride!
